Earthquake Damage and Earthquake Insurance -- Studies of a Rational Basis for Earthquake Insurance

This is not a casual bedtime read, but it is a fascinating piece of engineering history. Not to mention a unique First Edition copy of this 1932 publication.

The author John R. Freeman (1855-1932) compiled decades of data from earthquake events and the conclusions of how buildings fail. It was intended for builders and the insurance industry to see the potential cost in damages and casualties by striving for building cost efficiency.

He was President of the Manufacturers Mutual Fire Insurance Company (with many other engineering credentials).

Along with all the techie stuff, the book includes a 10-page fold-out panorama photo print of the damage from the 1908 San Francisco earthquake. Also a 4-page color map of bedrock stability of Boston, MA. Many pages of photos showing earthquake damaged buildings and structures.

This book is the 1932 First Edition published by McGraw-Hill. store The book pages and fold out sections are in excellent condition, The heavy red cloth book cover is strong and tight.

This copy has what may be a cellophane book jacket (an antique type of plastic book-cover).
It is intact, but not in good condition. I am selling it as-is. The Buyer can remove it and the cover can be cleaned up. Also see the picture of the unique corner fastener that held this book cover in place. (It is imprinted FREEMAN Earthquake Damage.)

This important book is in the collection of many Ivy League and other prominent universities.

Also, this edition of the book has been used to create new made to order copies. These don't have the map and photos. This book has also been scanned to create and on-line copy.

Don't' miss out on the special copy of structural engineering history.
