This medium sized mosaic panel features a semi abstract flower head in a soft yellow, deep lilac, navy and brown. Various tiles, beads and pieces of glass and crockery make up this light and happy piece, with the flower set against a cream background. HOW IS IT MADE?

Working on a base of (usually) ply store wood, or sometimes MDF, a hanging hook is screwed onto the reverse. A design is drawn by hand in pencil, then mosaic pieces are applied individually with a combined adhesive/grout mix in white, cream or colour depending on the design. Many materials are used and these may include tesserae (tiny tiles), glass beads or tiles, mirror, ceramic, reclaimed or vintage crockery, shell, metal or beach finds. After drying the piece is grouted then cleaned. Due to the uneven nature of the pieces used, grouting may be repeated several times until all air pockets are gone and there is a smooth finish. After the grout is satisfactory a scalpel blade is used to clean up any rough areas, the tiles are polished and the edge of the piece is sanded smooth. Finally the edges of the piece are painted to match the grout and give a neat finish when seen side on.

SAFETY

The sides are carefully finished to minimize sharp edges as far as possible, but broken crockery can be sharp so care should be taken when dusting. Please note they are heavy, and therefore not suitable for small children to handle. If hung in a childs room they should be out of reach so there is no possibility of the piece falling on anyone. These mosaics can also freestand on a shelf, and a product like white tack should be applied to the bottom edge to prevent slipping.
