A huge freeform Koroit boulder opal from Koroit mines, Australia. This fancy-shaped cabochon has some thin violet-blue opal veins within the brown host rock (ironstone). Perfect for any jewelry making project and ideal for a unique pendant.

Boulder opals are mined from large brown ironstone boulders, the multicolor opal forms as thin veins in cracks and fissures within these boulders. The stones are cut with the host ironstone still remaining on the back, usually into free-form, irregular shapes. Boulder Opals are mined only in Queensland, Australia.
Due to its hardness, Opal is suitable for all-purpose in jewelry.
Opal (from the Sanskrit upala meaning jewel) is a form of Silica with water content usually ranging from 6 to 10%. Opals are mainly found in Australia, Mexico, United States, and more recently in Ethiopia.
Opal is the birthstone for the month of October.
