This statuette carved out of wood and embellished with bronze and pearls, was a guardian figure of the Fang people of ancient Gabon.
It is believed to embody the core qualities that the Fangs cherished and was known to protect the living from the powers of the dead, by shielding tribesmen from unknowingly coming into contact with the powers that were believed to reside in the skulls of the Fang ancestors, which were potentially dangerous.
Over generations of sculptors and with aesthetic refinement, these Bieri statuettes became figures of symbolic significance and were no longer of spiritual significance.
