Batik workers/ batikers who mostly are female, skilled at drawing fine lines and small dots on cotton using ‘canting' and ‘malam'
The dyers who color the batik with natural and plant dyes back then and now some using chemical dyes. Each dyer has their own recipe to make a certain color so every dyer have their own unique signature color that other people cannot replicate as they keep it as secret.

Batik is a drawing/painting/ a form of writing on cotton cloth using canting. Mbatik or the process of batiking produces batik in the form of various motifs which have specific characteristics which are passed onto the batik cloth.

The canting is the primary tool used in the batik process which determins whether the results of the batik called batik tulis or not. The canting is use to draw the motif with liquid wax (malam). It is made of copper and comes in various size. Just think of canting as the brush when you draw.

Through further development other tools have come into existence facilitating the batik process, for example the cap (printing block/ hand stamped). Such block-printing. Produces motifs identical to batik but the result is not comparable to the true batik tulis. To differentiate between the two, the designations ‘written' batik (hand painted) and ‘blocked/cap/hand stamped' batik are used.

There are few types of batik in Indonesia but the well known are mostly:
- Dutch batik (batik belanda/ Indische batik), sometimes referred to as Indo- European batik, made by Duch people who had long settled in Indonesia or Eurasians of mixed Dutch and Asian (Javanese, Arab or Chinese) heritage in the Pekalongan area, dating from 1880 to 1930
- Pesisir batik from Pesisir area of Java, stretching from Cirebon in the west to Lasem in the east
- Chinese Peranakan batik, made by the descendants of Chinese immigrants wo were born in the Indonesian archipelago

What all these pieces have in common is the high standard of their workmanship.
In 2009 UNESCO designated Indonesian batik masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
