The lotus is a magical cousin to the lily, and its appearance in the summer is a moment that always fills me with awe. Since ancient times the lotus has captured the imagination of spiritual seekers. It seems miraculous that a flower so lovely can rise up from the mud. In the day it turns its face to follow the sun as it moves across the sky, and it closes its petals at night. I have never been able to get a lotus to survive the marauding raccoons at my pond, but on a trip to Portland I captured this particular flower in the afternoon light of the Chinese water garden. I have kept this photograph at my beside ever since, to remind me of the light.

This print is part of a series called "The Gardener's Almanac of Irreproducible Phenomena" in which I attempt to capture the mysteries of my garden as it moves through the seasons. It is a combination of original painting and photography, produced as a limited edition print and also offered as blank cards.

The finished piece is meticulously proofed and printed on archival rag paper with pigment inks rated to last for 100 years or more. The prints come with a certificate of authenticity verifying the edition number and the edition size.

These prints are traditionally numbered and signed in light pencil with the number on the left and the signature on the right, just below the image. They can be framed with or without a mat.
