Antique jewelry encompassed many techniques, materials and styles. Enameling was a technique used on jewelry for hundreds of years. It ranged in different techniques in enameling, all creating different design effects to the piece.
One enameling technique is called Basse-Taille enamel. This type of enameling technique requires the artist to create a low relief pattern by engraving into the metal. When looking a this enameling, you will see that the enamel sits lower than the surrounding metal. The designs made by the engraving can be simple or elaborate determined on the motif of the piece.
The yellow enameling has a dot pattern, making it look either like a basket or brick wall. The flowers have the veins engraved giving depth to the flowers.
Brass is most likely the pin base. The pin is accented by 3 rock crystal stones which are open in the back. Looking through the jewelers loop, you can see they are hand carved. Back mechanism is a rivet hinge with a "C" Tube catch primarily used in Europe.
