This print captures the nuclear powered merchant ship SAVANNAH. The concept of a nuclear powered merchant ship was first suggested by President Eisenhower in 1955 as part of his 'atoms for peace' initiative. Congressional approval came the following year with funding for the design and construction of the ship coming from the Atomic Energy Commission, MARAD, and the Department of Commerce.

The ship's appearance is a favorite among U.S. maritime enthusiasts. Designed by George G. Sharp, Inc. she features a flared clipper bow, sweeping deck sheer, and a streamlined teardrop-shaped superstructure that is quintessential 'midcentury-modern' design.
