This beautifully carved wooden mask comes from Nepal. It was purchased there in the 1980s. It is a mistical, genuine work of an art created with traditional technique by local artisans. It also has an important spiritual value.

Nepalese masks are original works of art, full of mystical meanings. The one you see was made by a talented craftsman who carefully modelled details such as facial features, ears and third eye. It is an item of importance to the Buddhist, it is store believed that such a mask can protect the house from evil spirits and hostile energies. The classical Nepali masks always represent deities or demons and never the dead or the ancestors. Besides, masks are more often used in processions and in rituals rather than in theatrical performances. The masks are made ritually by members of the caste of painters. The images have to be made in accordance with the prescriptions laid down in local manuals of iconography. It is impossible for a painter to break the rules for the painting of a religious image. Each colour has a certain significance: red is associated with anger, blue black with energy and power, white with purity and death. Similar masks were used in the Buddhist Monasteries of the Mountain Areas of North Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet during their local ritual Buddhist ceremonies and performances connected with Buddhist-tantric traditions. These masks are also used to chase away evil spirits from houses or villages.

The mask is in good condition. Although they have signs of previous use, some light wear and features from previous display. Please bear in mind that you are buying an authentic, vintage item, which is more than 40 years old. It was handcrafted and may have small defects or other imperfections, which are a part of its beauty!
