This copy is a first edition, with the 1909 publication date (shown); however, it is a later state, evidenced largely by the publisher's name as "Reilly and Lee" rather than "Reilly and Britton." The company changed its name in 1919, so this copy is from at least that year. Note that this copy is missing the numeral 121 on page 121; also, there is no caption nor page number on page 129. These typesetting errors are indicative of the first edition. Unlike many of the later printings, this copy does not have a list of titles on the verso of the half-title.

As the photos show, a previous owner has colored in some of the illustrations (approximately 4); an example is shown. As noted, most pages are clean, but some have smudges and soiling, as is typical of antique children's books. There is some light foxing on the first and last few pages. Note also that a portion of the last page has been cut out. The covers have bumping, rubbing, and fraying; note the tear at the head of the spine.

This is a scarce, collectible, and lovely book --a great find for collectors of Oz books and/or those who enjoy charming children's books, especially from the early 1900s.
