This beautiful Buddha head was hand carved by a Balinese master sculptor.
Very few carvers of this caliber remain in Bali. Sadly, now many of the shops there sell much lower quality carvings or resin Buddha heads instead.
The statue stands 11 inches high. It is seven inches wide from ear to ear, and seven inches deep from the tip of the nose to the back of the head.
Buddha head statues are not just the depictions of the head of the Buddha, but the symbolic as well as spiritual representation of the enlightened one's wisdom and knowledge.
The protuberance on the top of the Buddha's head, known as the Ushnisha, represents the attainment of the Buddha's enlightenment,
The circular dot placed on the forehead of Buddhist images as an auspicious mark. It symbolizes a third eye, which in turn symbolizes vision into the divine world; a sort of ability to see past our mundane universe store of suffering.
The elongated earlobes represent the Buddha's hearing power; it is believed that he hears what is needed in the world.
This was carved in the 1980s. Please see the pictures to see a very slight crack at the hairline in front of one of the ears. It's not particularly noticeable when one looks at the carving, but please note that the crack exists.
