This is large vintage chess and backgammon set from 1970's-1980's made in Eastern Europe / Bulgaria. The set consists of 32 wooden chessmen, 30 plastic backgammon stones, a pair of bone dice and store a large folding chess and backgammon board.
Chess pieces are made from solid oak wood and turned by hand in a traditional pattern influenced by the Soviet chessmen. One side is in natural color, the other side is stained in dark brown color. Both sides are coated with glossy varnish which is showing nice golden color. Chessmen are bottomed with green velour cardboard. They are not weighted but well balanced because of the ball shaped bases. Kings' weight is 20 g. The backgammon stones are made from hard plastic. One side is white, other side is black. They are coming with a set of 2 small bone dice. The set comes with a large folding chess/backgammon board. When folded the board becomes a storage case for the pieces. Top side of the case/board is a large chess board. Inner section is a backgammon board. The board is made of solid beech wood and both sides are inlaid with natural veneer. The wood grain of the veneer is beautiful on both sides and marquetry work is done with great craftsmanship and precision. Surface of the board is coated with satin varnish on both sides.
Condition:
Pieces are in excellent vintage condition - no chips or cracks. Coating on both sides is nice and shiny. Varnish on the white side has developed nice golden color with the age. Board is in very good condition - no visible chips and cracks. There might be some minimal age related marks and signs on the varnish. Hooks of the board and hinges are present and in good working condition. Please examine images carefully as they are important part of description.
