Information about Indonesian Batik

This batik was all drawn by hand with a tjanting (canting)--a tool with a spout and reservoir for hot wax.
The patterns were applied to fine cotton with the tjanting. After drawing the intricate pattern, the fabric is dipped into a dye bath and causes the wax-covered areas to resist the dye.

These steps repeat until the final patterns and colors are achieved. Finally, the cloth is boiled to remove all of the wax and sets the dyes. Batik takes many forms, from traditional textiles to fine artwork.
