West African Vintage Carved store Ewe Doll Figure

Vintage hand carved sculptural figure made by the Ewe people of Ghana and Togo, West Africa.
These carvings representing twins or the spirit of twins. Twins or Venovi as they are often known as are good omens, but if one twin dies, a carving is obtained to represent the dead twin and is cared for similarly to the actual child. Often simple garments are made and small adornment are added to these figures.
This doll figure is approximately 8” inches tall and carved representing the female figure. She has dark stained corn row hair with blue tattoo marks on the upper torso with blue underpants/shorts and dark shoes. She does show some signs of age and slight cracking at her shoulder but has a beautiful patina, with sweet sleepy eyes and a wonderfully worn look.
