Occupational, vintage African American store tintype photo

This photo come sin good condition, there is some slight bending to the image in certain sports, all fairly typical wear. I'm not entirely sure what occupation is being represented here, as you can see there is obviously something being string between the woman's hands, maybe a thick string? Sold as is.
