The final year of Van Goghs life was spent mainly in the asylum at Saint-Remy near Arles. While a patient in the late summer of 1889, he painted several versions of this picture. The cypress tree described by the artist as "a splash of black in the sunny landscape" looms over the cornfield and wind fill the painting with turbulent movement. The same writhing rhythms animate the sky, hills and trees.
