I liked the idea of attaching this intricate book-shaped hinged locket to a black velvety elastic ribbon to be used for a special journal or diary. This rare WW2-era piece has the Caduceus medical symbol on the front and an intricate filigree pattern on the back. It has a dark patina which I chose to leave as some collectors prefer this (I believe it's silver plated) and the hinge itself is in fine working order. The 1940s stock wedding photos are still safely tucked inside. The photos have been set under a clear protective film. This piece makes for a unique graduation gift for a loved one in the medical field. Pair it with a journal to personalize a gift for the vintage/book lover in your life. If you don't wish to use it as a bookmark it can be easily detached and paired with a matching chain to make a fabulous necklace - in fact, let me know if you would prefer this, and I can possibly source a suitable chain.

*This ribbon is a little less stretchy than some of my other elastic ribbons and fits snugly on standard-sized paperbacks (8" H), and standard-sized journals up to 10" H. If you think you may require another size ribbon, please message before ordering.

The image of serpents wrapped around a staff is a familiar one in the medical field, decorating pharmaceutical packaging and hospitals alike. Snake bites are generally bad news, and so the animal might seem ill-fitting as the symbol of the medical profession, but the ancient emblem actually has quite a story behind it.

There are actually two versions of the symbol. The winged version is known as a caduceus, and the stick is actually a staff that was carried by the Olympian god Hermes. In Greek mythology, Hermes was a messenger between the gods and humans (which explains the wings) and a guide to the underworld (which explains the staff). Hermes was also the patron of travellers, which makes his connection to medicine appropriate because, in the olden days, doctors had to travel great distances by foot in order to visit their patients.
