A beautiful, old, hand made Batik from Tegal in central Java. Tuli is the Indonesian word used to describe a batik that is totally handmade by "kanting" (pouring) the wax onto the material. It is not made by stamp or by mechanically printing onto the material. This is the traditional and most labour intensive way of making a batik.

This batik is a PagiSoir (day night) batik that has two designs on the one piece of material, which meet in the middle on a diagonal line. This allows the owner to wear one design during the day and what appears to be a different batik at night. This practice was supposedly introduced during the war when the store supply of cotton was limited. This one has a very dark blue (almost black) background. Each end of the batik has adifferent pattern in white and brown on the background and one end has a motif of peacocks while the other has a motif of pheasants. It is in very good condition on soft cotton.

Tegal is city on the north coast of Java to the west of Pekalongan, the most famous of the north coast batik centres.

A Kain is a piece of material about 2 or a bit more metres in length. This one is an unusually long batik, 104cm high by 216cm long.

A superb example of Indonesian batik.
