Vintage French Bronze Woman of the Apocalypse or Woman Clothed in the Sun Medal
This antique mandorla shaped medal from the second half of the 19th century features a full height image of the Blessed Virgin Mary as Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. The image of the Virgin is enveloped in a glorious elliptical aureole to show that she is the first in honor among pure human creatures ranking immediately after God himself and superior to saints and angels. Mary is invested with a full body aureole and surrounded by stars to represent her attribute as the woman of the Apocalypse—a prophetic symbol, of which she is the reality.
Except for the stars around the perimeter, reverse side is blank.
The medal is crafted in bronze and measures 1" wide x about 2" tall. It is signed by the engraver and medalist Jean Baptiste Würden (1807-1874). The Würdens were of German origin and they were a family of silversmiths and medallists. Jean Baptiste Würden started his business of producing medals around 1845. At his death his three sons took over. Around the turn of the 19th century they stopped producing medals.
